Prototyping e-commerce websites with Ubercart

From time to time we implement Drupal websites. Drupal is my favorite web framework and I feel quite comfortable working with it. For a client I had to implement an e-commerce store prototype. This client wanted to know how the shop would work with Drupal and I thought it would be a good opportunity to learn and play with Ubercart, Drupal’s e-commerce module.

So I took  some hours to play with it. First I read chapter 10 of Angela Byron’s excellent book, Using Drupal. It’s an excellent chapter that saves you a lot of time figuring out how to start with Ubercart. So following the instructions on his book in two hours I had a working proof-of-concept of an e-commerce website. Trust me, the chapter saved me a lot of time.

After implementing the website described in the chapter, I started to play with it. First thing I did was implement the Acquia Prosper theme. It’s a free theme developed by TopNotchThemes and it integrates pretty well with Ubercart. On top of that, it is quite easy to customize and it is very well documented. I highly recommend it.

Well, to make the story short, in less than three hours I had a working prototype of an e-commerce website. Just read Webchick’s book and use the Ubercart module and Acquia Prosper theme.
